In all the sutras and tantras teaching, it is stated that freeing the lives of sentient beings who are certain to be killed is supreme among all types of longevity practices. It is said that freeing even one single life reminds us of the preciousness of our own life. And through this practice, we will learn to not take our lives for granted, thereby prolonging our lifespan.
On a lovely breezy sunny day, the 27th day of February, the day after the occasion of the birthday of H. E. Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche; His Holiness Kyabgon Jedrung Yangsi Rinpoche and H.E. Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche led the lamas and 40 local students in conducting a fish liberation ceremony in Hong Kong. It was a wonderful opportunity for Rinpoche’s students to accumulate merits on this auspicious day.
Under the leadership of Rinpoche, a fisherman’s boat bedecked with prayer offerings carrying monks and students sailed out to sea with 1.3 tonnes of fishes. Along the journey, preliminary Buddhist fish liberation prayers were recited before releasing all the fishes back to the ocean, thus providing them with a pathway to natural long living and subsistence while also nurturing our sense of kindness and virtue.
May we dedicate the merits for all beings’ long life.
